Candidates file for elections

The filing period for candidates seeking public office is open, resulting in several Republicans seeking one of two positions on the Sweetwater County Board of County Commissioners.

According to information from the Sweetwater County Clerk’s Office, three Republicans have filed to seek election to the board of county commissioners. Commissioner Lauren Schoenfeld, along with Mary Thoman and Mark Peterson have registered as of Tuesday morning.

Schoenfeld and Thoman both sought to fill Commissioner Don Van Matre’s unexpired term following his death last year. The two initially vied for placement on a three-person list to be sent to the commissioners by the Sweetwater County GOP. After former Commissioner John Kolb and Island Richards were selected, voting was tied between Thoman and Schoenfeld. A coin flip was employed to break the deadlock, resulting in Schoenfeld earning the final spot on the GOP’s list of potential replacements.

Mark Peterson is a former Green River City Council member who has made unsuccessful election bids in mayoral and county commissioner contests.

Only one person was listed as a candidate in the upcoming Green River City Council elections. Sherry Bushman has filed to seek election in Ward I, setting up a possible contest with incumbent Tom Murphy should he decide to seek re-election.

Bushman sought election to the Council two years ago, but was defeated by Jim Zimmerman.

Outside of Green River, the Rock Springs City Council has one candidate. Rob Zotti will seek re-election to represent Ward II. In Wamsutter, Sally Garwood has filed to make an election bid for a seat on the town’s Council. The filing period continues through May 29.
