High school accepts wrestling scores

Officials from Sweetwater County School District No. 2 decided not to appeal a decision that stripped the State 4A wrestling title from Green River High School, giving it to Kelly Walsh.

During the 2020 State wrestling tournament, GRHS was originally named the state champions, but a scoring error was discovered that allowed Kelly Walsh to leave with the title. After meeting with officials from the Wyoming High School Athletics Association, the district announced it would file an appeal.

According to a press release from the district, administrators conducted a inquiry into the situation and sought assistance from several state high school athletics associations, national and state wrestling coaches associations and several wrestling coaches throughout the United States. Following the district’s research efforts, the final outcome was determined to be correct, resulting with the district to drop work on an appeal.

“Sweetwater County School District No. 2 and Green River High School administration want to make it clear that although our research indicated that the final team scoring is accurate, we have an expectation that the WHSAA Executive Board will address this issue and how it was handled in a serious manner,” the release states.
