Our view: First responders go above and beyond again

The area’s first responders typically excel when working under conditions most people would find trying.

Firefighters, ambulance workers and police officers are often the people tasked with responding to emergencies large and small. They’re the people seeing us through some of the most difficult moments of our lives, fighting the house fire, assisting the injured and cleanup after a vehicle crash or even making sure our city’s residents are safe from criminals seeking to gain from someone else. Their jobs are difficult. There’s no other way to put it.

However, they’re also people who are concerned about making our community the best place to live. The first responder drive-bys hosted by the Green River Fire Department, Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office, Castle Rock Ambulance Service and Green River Police Department is only the latest example of that fact.

When children were unable to experience a regular birthday party as a result of COVID-19 distancing suggestions, the men and women in these organizations came together to help put a few smiles on faces. They weren’t paid to drive up and wish someone a happy birthday, with their lights flashing and horns blaring. They did it because it was the right thing to do.

It’s the kind of thing that can’t last -- and won’t. The GRFD is pulling the plug on the drive-bys May 10 in favor of hosting tours of the fire station.

The warm-hearted visits are a symptom of the very peculiar moment in history we’re living through. Yet, that’s what a lot of people needed -- the validation that despite being isolated, someone out there cared

We want to thank our first responders for everything they do of course, but for also going above and beyond in helping light a few little smiles and create long-lasting memories through a simple birthday visit. Good work, everyone.
