Spring sports canceled

In an unusual year that saw the cancellation of the State boys and girls basketball and State speech and debate tournaments in March and multiple postponements to the springs sports season, the Wyoming High School Athletics Association announced the cancellation of the 2020 spring sports season last week.

Boys and girls soccer, as well as outdoor track and field, will not take place for Green River High School’s athletes.

“Due to the continuing influence of COVID-19, we are not able to predict when it will be safe to resume spring sports, nor are we able to assure if any of our communities would be able to host any of our events,” a statement on the WHSAA website reads. “As we all continue to adapt to the pandemic, academics need to be the focus of our students and schools to be able to complete a successful school year.”

Tony Beardsley, athletic director for Sweetwater County School District No. 2, said while athletic directors from across the state prepared for an abbreviated season, they knew the possibility existed the season would be cancelled.

“I’m as disappointed as anyone,” he said. “We couldn’t host our soccer tournament and track meet.”

Beadsley said he understands how important sports are to Green River’s residents and knows hard the news has been for student, parents and spectators.

He also said he and other athletic directors are preparing for what schools can do during the summer months, which includes sports camps and possible workout schedules. He said he’s also working on how to implement fall schedules and how the district can prepare the fall student athletes, in case the summer programs are also cancelled.

“We’re looking far ahead,” Beardsley said.
