Basketball teams prepare for regionals

The Green River High School basketball teams are headed to Regionals this week, aiming for a shot to play at the State basketball tournaments next weekend.

The girls varsity team continues to be a dominant force, earning victories against Rock Springs Thursday night and Star Valley Friday. Playing in Green River, the Lady Wolves took a 66-56 win against the Lady Tigers, then defeated Star Valley 60-44.

The boys have had a few struggles as of late, losing to the Rock Springs Tigers Thursday 67-63 and taking a second loss to Star Valley that ended 92-54.

In a previous interview with the Star, head coach Laurie Ivie said the boys are peaking at the right time, but said many of the teams in their conference are difficult to judge because many of the teams haven't played consistently throughout the season. However, she remains convinced the Wolves will round out the season on a high note.

As the ladies prepare for the upcoming tournament, head coach Rick Carroll said he's happy with how the girls are playing, but still wants to improve their defense and their communication.

"We're just going to continue to do those things," he said.

He also plans to have the team watch film and find other potential weaknesses they have before hitting the road.

He said the Lady Wolves are playing well offensively and have been good at finding open pockets, but believes they just need to play smarter and communicate better overall.

As the veteran coach recently celebrated coaching his 700th game, Carroll said it's a role he enjoys taking on, enjoying hosting practices and working with students to improve their talents. He said he's also enjoyed working with many of the assistant coaches over the years.

"I've worked with many talented athletes and many talented assistant coaches," he said.

The first-seeded girls team will have their first game in Evanston Thursday, where they will take on Cody at 3:30 p.m. The boys, seeded No. 3 in the southwest, will take on Rock Springs Thursday at 1:30 p.m.
