A morning of dance at GRHS

For 90 children, it was a chance to learn from their idols on Green River High School's dance team.

Divided into several groups, they learned a routine over the course of a morning, dancing to "You're Welcome" and "Where you are" from the Disney movie "Moana." At the end of the morning, they were dancing in synch with high school dancers.

The annual dance camp is the team's largest fundraiser of the year. Dance coach Christine Peterson said they often have a great turnout, both from girls who make a point to attend every year and those who want to try out dance.

There was also a large group from Lincoln Middle School, many of whom were on the middle school's dance team.

Peterson said the dance camp also acts to recruit girls into the team when they start high school.

"We always tell them 'we hope you try out for the team in a few years,'" she said.

The middle school routine set to "Where you are" was created by Rayne Welch while the elementary routine to "You're Welcome" was created by Sydney Ferrer.

While the morning's activities helped young girls dance along with the high school dance team, it helps create bonds between the dancers. However, one dancer had a chance to tighten her sisterly bond with one student at the camp.

Ashlyn Santhuff, a sophomore, coached the group that had her little sister in it. This was the second year she'd had the opportunity to do so, though Santhuff admits she isn't always the easiest student to teach.

"It's kind of hard – she likes to talk," Santhuff said.

Regardless of the challenge, Santhuff thinks it will be a memory both will cherish for a lifetime.

The team brought home two state trophies last year, earning second place in both hip-hop and jazz.
