GRHS volleyball team picks up first win

It was another great learning experience for the Lady Wolves Volleyball team as they played several teams at a tournament this weekend.

The Green River Lady Wolves traveled to Gillette to participate in the Gillette invitational. It was an opportunity for them to play a couple of teams they had never played before and gain experience.

Head coach Rikki Shantz said on Friday the team played Burns, a Wyoming team they hadn’t played before.

“We got our first win,” Shantz said.

It was one of two wins the team obtained over the weekend, but they won a lot of sets.

“I was really proud of how the girls played,” she said.

The Lady Wolves also played Campbell County and Buffalo. In both games, they won the first set and lost the last two sets.

Shantz said at the beginning of the year they are not looking so much as which team is playing across from them because they are trying to learn what they need to do to improve their own game. They are still learning how to function as a team and how to play well together.

“I’m definitely seeing some great things,” she said. “We are winning some sets and that’s good. Learning how to win is going to be key.”

On Saturday, the team played Gering, Neb., and won the first set, but lost the last two.

Also on Saturday, the Lady Wolves played Cheyenne South and won. In this game they lost the first set and won the last two sets.

The last game they played was against Laramie and they lost. Shantz said this game was really rushed because they had to get on the bus at a certain time and she didn’t even have time to call time outs. The Lady Wolves felt rushed and so did Laramie.

Regardless of the outcomes, the Lady Wolves continue to improve. Shantz said she is hoping the Lady Wolves will see how much they have improved from one tournament to the next. She knows the team is capable of focusing on improving an area and making that change.

“We’re just continuing to improve on passing and defense,” Shantz said.

The Lady Wolves will play their first home game tonight at 6 p.m. against the Rock Springs Lady Tigers.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s conference or not, it’s a huge game for us,” Shantz said.

They are scheduled to play Cody Saturday at 1 p.m.
