Kids show sidewalk chalk creativity

The city's clock tower's sidewalk is full of vibrant colorful drawings from the youth.

Last week, the Sweetwater County Library hosted its third annual Chalk it Up! event. They had music playing and chalk, charcoal, paintbrushes and water set out. The participants had a time allotment based on their age.

The four groups were from ages 3-5, 6-8, 9-11 and 12-15. Each group was given three winners; most creative, most original and most artistic. The winners received a certificate, coloring page and courtesy coupon. However, each participant went home with a coloring page of some kind.

Most of the kids immediately grabbed bright colors and set to work. A few tried their hand at the charcoal. Each made a unique picture to add to the sidewalk mural.

While the library's summer activities are coming to an end there is still time to register for the summer reading program. Youth services Manager, Becky Iwen, enjoyed running the event and seeing the kids participate.

She still encourages everyone to participate in the reading program and join them for their end of summer medieval faire on Aug. 7.

"The reading program ends on Aug. 10 you can still register online through the library's website, sweetwaterlibraries.com," Iwen said. "For more information you can also come down to the library and talk to a librarian."
