Summer homecoming

This summer, I, Lexi Mitchell, will intern at the Green River Star. As a communication major at the University of Wyoming, I jumped at the chance to return to the town I spent 10 years of my life residing. While I grew up a little south of Green River in Vernal, Utah, I spent my summers on my grandparents’ ranch in McKinnon. This led to my love of Wyoming and relocating to Green River after graduating high school. I have deep family connections in the community and have held several jobs in the area, most notably at Arctic Circle, where I worked my way through Western Wyoming Community College. I reluctantly moved away two years ago to further my education in Laramie.

Summers have always been my favorite time of year in Sweetwater County. I love to indulge in the fairs, rodeos, festivals and other community-based events that provide a glimpse into the hearts of the people. I especially look forward to Flaming Gorge Days and cheering on my family in the three-on-three tournaments. The area is full of adventures I pack into my summer, including floating the river, boating the Flaming Gorge, 4-wheeling at the sand dunes and camping in the surrounding mountains. I enjoy supporting my nieces and nephews in their soccer and baseball games. I cannot wait for the beautiful summer weather to finally kick in, so I can begin making more wonderful memories.

Photography has been a longtime love of mine and I hope to capture some great shots of the beautiful town and people. I enjoy being out in public and hearing stories from strangers. I am determined to dive in and learn more about the people here and their future. This opportunity to intern in a city that is full of such wonderful people is the highlight of my summer. I am excited to help contribute to and learn more about the community while interning at the Star.

Green River will always claim a special place in my life. I have seen firsthand how the people who live here care for and support one another. I could not find a better place to spend my time learning more about community journalism than in this city. I am beyond thrilled to spend my summer at a place I truly love.
