Former GRHS graduate honored at UW

Katie James, a 2015 Green River High School graduate, who is currently studying at the University of Wyoming, was named the Outstanding Physical Education Major of the Year by the Division of Kinesiology and Health.

This award is presented to one of the top physical education majors in the state of Wyoming. James was presented the award at the annual DKH awards banquet April.

James is the daughter of Casey and Aaron James of Green River.

She is the granddaughter of Kathy and Tom Ellis of Rock Springs.

In May of 2019, James will graduate from the University of Wyoming with a bachelor of science degree in DKH, focus of study in physical education teacher education with a 3.0 GPA. Additionally, James is completing course work for the health education endorsement as well as coaching certifications.

She is currently completing student teaching in Rock Springs at Rock Springs High School with Ramiro Candeleria and North Park Elementary with Ruth Casey.

While a student at GRHS, James was captain of the cheerleading team, while earning All-State honors all four years of high school.

She was a member of National Honor Society and Tri-tones choir. Additionally, as a member of the cheerleading squad, Katie engaged in multiple and continual community service projects.

While attending the University of Wyoming, James volunteered for Healthy Pokes, an after-school program working with at risk youth. She coached Polar Bears youth soccer team, volunteered for Special Olympics, Indian Paint Brush Elementary School fitness night and Beitel Elementary School Jump Rope for Heart events. She also volunteered to work at The Big Event, a Laramie-wide community service project to help residents in need. James was active in the Physical Education Teacher Education Student Association also acting as secretary.

While at UW, James competed in intramural soccer.

Following graduation, James has been hired to teach physical and health education at Rock Springs.
