Radio operators seek to advance in class

A couple of residents were trying to see if they had what it takes to move up a level as a Ham radio operator.

On Saturday, the Sweetwater Amateur Radio Club and its amateur radio testing group were busy administering tests to a couple of residents who wanted to move onto the general class level.

Rick Breininger, club member, said volunteer examiners are overseen by the Federal Communications System administration.

These volunteer testers give the 35-question test. To move onto the next level, test takers must get at least 26 questions correct.

The testers must have accredited volunteer examiner status to give the test.

The questions revolve around amateur radio theory, technical aspects of the Ham radio, and the rules and regulations one must follow in order to operate a Ham radio

There are three levels in amateur radio, the first is technician, second it general class and third is amateur extra.

“There are others, but that’s all we have now days,” Breininger said.

He said five people were supposed to come and test, but a couple of them decided they weren’t ready and another one couldn’t make it due to bad weather conditions.

Usually, these tests can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

“It varies on how well you know the material,” he said.

The club is always looking for new members. Those who are interested in joining or want more information can contact Breininger at 307-707-4010.
