GR seniors learn the basics of cell phone use

On Monday, seniors were learning the basics of how to operate their smart phones.

This month, Western Wyoming Community College employee Jen Stone, is teaching a class every Monday at 10 a.m.

This class is geared toward seniors who want to learn more about how to use the features on their cellular phones.

Around 10 seniors were in Stone's class, where Stone showed them on her phone how to look up various settings.

They started by going through each item in their settings folder. From data and storage to plane mode and wall backgrounds. No item in the settings folder was off limits.

Some of the seniors complained about their cell phone batteries going dead in the evenings. Stone explained to them that if they have a lot of their apps open all day, their battery will decrease fast.

She also told them if they have a lot of photos in the messages folder, that can eat up a lot of space and drain the battery too. She encouraged them to save the photos they wanted from their messages folder to their photo folder to free up space. Once all of the photos are saved, they are encouraged to delete the photos in their messages folder.

Stone said most of the smart phones don't come with manuals, so she encouraged the seniors to play with their phones. She said that's the best way to learn how to use them. She told them if they ever feel like they are in the wrong spot, they can always click the back button of clear out of the screen all together.

Stone encouraged the seniors to keep looking through all of the options their phones have and write down any questions they may have.

"We're going to start getting into this a little bit more," she said. "Play with your phones so we can see what questions you have."
