Wolves tennis defeats 2 Cheyenne teams

The Green River High School tennis team took on the three Cheyenne high schools at home over the weekend, which ended in two victories and the team’s first conference defeat.

Securing victories over the Cheyenne South and East schools Friday and Saturday morning, the Wolves, undefeated in conference play at that point, squared off against an undefeated Cheyenne Central in a contest to see which school would keep their flawless record.

According to head coach Phil Harder, the Cheyenne South’s varsity squad arrived with only two girl competitors, who lost their matches in singles competition. South then forfeited the three doubles matches to Green River. On the boys’ side, Green River overcame South’s players 3-2. Saturday morning the Wolves took on East, with the boys winning 4-1 and the girls succeeding 3-2 over East. However, Central’s team would prove to be a strong group of players, defeating the Lady Wolves 3-2 and sweeping the boys 5-0. Regardless of the last match’s outcome, Harder is happy with how his players are competing.

“Our kids have been playing well,” he said.

The Wolves will now prepare for Regionals, which take place at Rock Springs High School Sept. 14-15.
