Letter: Volunteer for your city

Dear Editor,

National Volunteer Week is April 15-21. A “Word on the Street” column in the Rocket Miner, shortly after Christmas, the question was “What can we do to get people more engaged and volunteering in the community?”

Here were some of the responses, “A lot of people don’t know where they can volunteer;” “... Make up fliers and put them on people’s vehicles” and “I think it is just a matter of ... getting people more aware of the opportunities.”

Just Serve.org is an easy way to find volunteer opportunities. It is a website where organizations can post their needs for volunteers and volunteers can find volunteer service that meets their needs. It is based on your area zip code and so everything is local.

Some of the opportunities are ongoing and some are a one day event. Some of the opportunities require specific skills and some require no skills. It has things to do for families, groups and individuals of all ages. There are several postings on the Green River site and more are on their way. One might be just what you are looking for.

If you are an organization that needs volunteers, check it out or if you are wanting to volunteer, but don’t know where to begin go to justserve.org and find an opportunity today.
