Herberger's will close in Rock Springs

Like J.C. Penney, Hastings, K-Mart and Sports Authority before it, Herberger’s in Rock Springs will close its doors.

Bon-Ton Stores Inc., which owns Herberger’s, announced on its website Tuesday that the company will wind down operations after a winning bid for the company’s assets was accepted.

The company filed for a court supervised corporate restructuring Feb. 4.

The Rock Springs store was not listed in a previously announced group of store closures issued by Bon-Ton Jan. 31.

According to a press release on Bon-Ton’s investor relations page, court approval of the sale will take place Wednesday.

“While we are disappointed by this outcome and tried very hard to identify bidders interested in operating the business as a going concern, we are committed to working constructively with the winning bidder to ensure an orderly wind-down of operations that minimizes the impact of this development on our associates, customers, vendors and the communities we serve,” Bon-Ton President and CEO Bill Tracy said in the release.

“We are incredibly grateful to all of our associates for their dedicated service to Bon-Ton and to our millions of loyal customers who we have had the pleasure to serve as their hometown store for more than 160 years,”

A timeline of when the store will close was not available as of press time.

Debbie Orr, general manager of the White Mountain Mall declined to comment on the situation. Dave Hanks, CEO of the Rock Springs Chamber of Commerce and Kayla McDonald of the Sweetwater Economic Development Coalition were unavailable for comment as of press time.
