GR resident wins store contest

“I haven’t won anything in my entire life,” a surprised Tom James said after the shock subsided.

Tom, a Green River resident, was shocked when friends, family and coworkers helped surprise him Thursday afternoon at the Crum Electric Supply Company in Rock Springs, where it was revealed that he had won two Polaris Timbersleds from Maverik’s “Stok’d in the Snow Sweepstakes.” The Timbersleds are convertible motorcycles that can be used as either motorcycles and snow bikes. Tom’s prize included the full conversion kits for the motorcycles.

Tom works as a delivery driver for Crum Electric and had his suspicions about being called back, saying his coworkers never invite him to lunch.

“I knew something was up,” he said. “My mind was blown when I came around the corner.”

Tom’s wife, Jody, said he had known about his prize for about a week prior to the reveal, initially dismissing the call she received as a scam until Maverik employees were able to convince her Tom had actually won the grand prize.

Jody said Tom was an avid snowmobiler when he was younger, being named the Wyoming champion snowmobiler in 1977. Tom said he, his cousin and father used to race in snowmobile events throughout the state.

Nitro, Maverik’s social media manager and spokesperson, said Tom had used 620 of the company’s Trail Points to win the contest.

The points are awarded to customers using the company’s Adventure Club loyalty card or Adventure Club Nitro debt card while making a purchase at the store. A Trail Point is awarded for each dollar spent and for each gallon of gasoline purchased.

Customers can then use the points online or through Maverik’s phone application to enter giveaways. The sweepstakes contest Tom won was provided through Stok Coffee, which is a brand of iced-coffee drinks available at Maverik.

Nitro, and a group of photographers, helped set up the surprise prior to Tom’s arrival.

The group hurriedly brought the bikes and other promotional materials into Crum Electric’s back warehouse, where they would stage the surprise. As people arrived, Nitro and his crew arranged how they would stand when Tom entered the building, ensuring everything would be positioned perfectly for the video that would be recorded. Tom’s surprise will be seen on monitors displayed at all 316 Maverik locations across 12 states, as well as the company’s social media accounts.

For Nitro, this was his second visit to Sweetwater County in a month, having previously visited Maverik’s Green River location to award an employee with an Apple laptop computer as part of an internal giveaway. Nitro said there is one thing he almost always hears when he’s awarding someone with a prize.

“Almost every single time I’ve done this, I hear ‘I never win anything,’” he said.
