City hosts Frostbite run, walk Saturday

Preregistration required

Residents are encouraged to get out and face the cold to participate in the Frostbite run and walk.

On Saturday, the city of Green River is hosting the Frostbite 5K, 10K and one-mile family fun run. Those who want to participate in the event must register and pay ahead of time at the website http://www.runnercard.com

“It’s just an extra thing we’re going to do,” recreation supervisor Katie Duncombe said about the fun run.

She said kids and parents can sign up to participate in the one-mile family fun run. Those participating in this run will go around Expedition Island’s loop track four times.

Necklaces and prizes will be given to those who complete the runs.

“That’s for fun,” she said.

The 5K and 10K races start at 9:30 a.m., while the fun run starts at 10:30 a.m. The 5K and 10K runs will start on the north side of the driving bridge and go down the Greenbelt. In the 5K, participants will travel down the Greenbelt and then go around the Union Pacific loop and back to the starting line, while participants of the 10K will make their way down the Greenbelt to Edgewater Park and then back to the starting line.

Prizes for first, second and third place in each age group will be given out. Those age groups are 5-17, 18-29, 30-45, 46-60 and 61-99.

Duncombe said because the event is taking place on St. Patrick’s Day participants are encouraged to wear green and dress up in Irish-themed costumes, such as Leprechauns.

“It’s just a way to get out and get active when the weather’s not so nice,” Duncombe said.

Those who have already registered will received a free T-shirt. Duncombe said they did order a few extra, but when those are gone, they’re gone. The T-shirts have a Leprechaun on them with snowflakes falling around him.

Duncombe said they will also have a St. Patrick’s Day-themed photo booth for participants to pose and take photos in.

As for breakfast, Boy Scout Troop 312 will be serving up pancakes in the Expedition Island Pavilion from 8-11 a.m.
