Letter: Sportsmen, residents should voice WSA thoughts

Dear Editor,

As a sportsman, I appreciate the rich opportunities experience the solitude, challenge and sense of tradition that Sweetwater County’s wild public lands and waters provide.

The opportunities to cast fly to surfacing cutthroat trout in the gin-clear waters in the Little Mountain Wilderness Study Area, or hunt big game by backpack are what make Sweetwater County such a great place to live.

I’m concerned that the Sweetwater County Commission will overlook these long-standing sporting values if it decides to proceed with joining Rep. Cheney’s bill to remove protections for all Wilderness Study Areas within the county. Everyone agrees long-term management solutions are needed for these Wilderness Study Areas, but these decisions ought to be made through collaborative discussion with sportsmen and the community. I ask the Sweetwater County Commission to work in coordination with local residents to achieve public land management solutions for these landscapes, which will sustain the lifestyle we all currently enjoy.
