Wrestlers are top of the 4A West

Wrestlers take first at regionals

The Green River High School wrestling team had a lot of success at the 4A West Regional Meet in Evanston.

The team took first in the competition, earning 217 points. Second place went to Kelly Walsh with 208 and Rock Springs rounded out the top three with 176 points.

Individually, Dominic Martinez and Clayson Mele worked their way to the top of the 106-pound division, meeting one another in the finals. Martinez took first place by rule over Mele, who finished second.

Cody Price took fourth in the 113-pound competition, losing the third-place match to Devyn Mostellar of Kelly Walsh by decision. His teammate Kade Flores fared better, taking second place in the division after a loss against Zack Vasquez from Rock Springs by decision.

At 120 pounds, Kade Knezovich took second, working his way to the finals, but coming up short against Jace Palmer from Kelly Walsh by decision. Nathan Campos, also competing in the division, took fifth place after losing by fall to Evanston's Isaac Saavadra.

Devon VanValkenburg, competing at 126 pounds, took sixth, losing to Natrona County High School's Kyler Henderson by decision.

At 132, Jacob Weipert took second, battling to the finals to face Cameron Metcalf from Rock Springs. Metclaf won by decision.

Nathan McCann, competing at 138, also placed second in his division, losing in the finals to Analu Benabise from Kelly Walsh.

Tanner Adam took first in the 145-pound division, defeating Kelly Walsh's Kevin Anderson by decision. Garrett Harris, also competing in the division, fared well with a third place finish, defeating Rock Springs' Wyatt Fletcher in the third-place consolation match.

At 152 pounds, Chance Anderson took fourth while Mac Orr placed fifth in the division. Anderson lost the third-place consolation match against Tristan Profaizer of Rock Springs by decision, while Orr lost in the third round of consolation matches to Natrona's Kaiden Jones by fall.

In the 160-pound division, Jon Ty Leininger took second. He lost in the finals to Rock Springs' Wyatt Yenney by decision. His teammate in the division, Brett McKeehan, lost in the second round of consolation matches to Natrona's Bryer Benham.

Nick Froats and Kaden Lloyd took third and fourth respectively in the 170-pound division. Froats would win by rule over Lloyd twice, once in the quarterfinals and a second time in the third-place consolation match.

Payton Tucker continued his dominance in the 182-pound division, taking first after defeating Kelly Walsh's Jesus Alvarado in the finals by fall. Also competing at 182, Seddon Sanders took fifth, being defeated by fall in the third round of consolation matches by Mayson Erickson of Evanston.

At 195, James McCarter took fourth, while Russell Ferrell placed eighth. McCarter made his way to the third-place consolation match, but was defeated by Adam Forbush of Rock Springs by Decision. McCarter won by rule over Ferrell in the consolation bracket's semifinals.

In the 220 division, Justin Rubalcaba took third, defeating Kelly Walsh's Duane Nussbaum. Sage Wilde took sixth in the division, after taking a loss by fall from Nussbaum in the first round of consolation matches.

John Makie, at 285, placed seventh, being defeated by fall in the consolation semifinals by AJ Kelly of Rock Springs.

The team will now head to Casper this weekend to make their bid for a third straight state title.
