GR football coach steps down

Don Maggi has stepped down from his position as head coach of the Wolves varsity football team. Maggi gave his resignation Monday.

“It has been an honor and pleasure to serve as head coach of the Green River Wolves. I am proud of our accomplishments on the field and in the development of young men. The support from the administration has been appreciated and I am thankful for the opportunity,” Maggi said in a press release. “I wish nothing but the best for the program in the future.”

According to the press release, Maggi said he wants to give his full attention to his family. He said coaching football is a year-round job, which has resulted in him asking his wife and children to make sacrifices with family time and schedules.

“A large part of their lives has revolved around my coaching duties and related commitments,” he said.

While he is stepping down from coaching, Maggi will continue teaching social studies at Green River High School. Tony Beardsley, athletics director for the school district, said Maggi has been a leader on the football field and in the classroom.

“I’m happy that coach Maggi has decided to remain at GRHS as a teacher,” Beardsley said in the press release.

Beardsley said replacing Maggi will be a difficult task and thanks him for his service to the school district.

During his seven years as head coach, Maggi’s teams have appeared at the state semi-finals five times. The Wolves won the 3A West Conference title in 2016 and played for a state championship in 2015.

The district will start its search for a new football coach in January.
