Wolves finish 3rd at Gillette meet

The Green River High School Wolves swimming and diving team kicked off their season at a relay and pentathlon competition.

“They did really well. I was pretty excited,” head coach Colleen Seiloff said. “I was just excited to see how competitive this group of boys are.”

She was happy to have six of her swimmers in the top 30 at the pentathlon. During a pentathlon, swimmers compete in the 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 100 butterfly and 50 freestyle. Those with the lowest scores did the best. Seiloff was proud to say Michael Richmond grabbed the first-place spot out of 108 swimmers, while James King broke the top five when he came in fourth place.

“If you have some well-rounded athletes, they are really going to pick up some points for you,” Seiloff said.

“I think, it was really good to get to go down to Gillette. There’s a lot of strong teams out there this year,” Seiloff said.

Based on what Seiloff has seen from her team, she believes that when the team sets goals, they can set some pretty high ones.

“They are not out of their reach,” she said.

The team will be talking about individual and team goals this week. However, Seiloff said team goals are easier to meet when an individual is doing their best to meet their own goals.

She said whether the team is going for a state title or finishing 10th at state it doesn’t matter. She said they still have to work hard and do the best they can.

“We’re just going to continue to work hard and try to improve,” she said.

The Wolves are looking forward to this weekend’s meet since it’s in Green River. The Green River Invite is scheduled to take place Friday at 4 p.m., and Saturday at 9 a.m., at the Green River Aquatic Center. So far, Laramie, Lander, Cheyenne Central, Rock Springs, Evanston, Lyman and Rawlins are scheduled to attend.

Seiloff said the team is looking forward to its first regular meet.

At this point, she’s still trying to figure out which events the swimmers will be in. It’s all about figuring out which swimmers are best at which events.
