Lady Wolves win 2, lose 1 at Lyman tournament

The Green River High School Lady Wolves kicked off the season by traveling to Lyman for its tournament this past weekend.

On Friday, the Lady Wolves grabbed their first win of the season in a commanding fashion, with a 57-18 win over Kemmerer.

Head coach Rick Carroll said Kemmerer just got a new coach this season after the team struggled for a few years.

At one point in the game, the Lady Wolves had a 40 point-plus lead and that’s when the running clock started. Carroll said a running clock doesn’t occur too often and it’s a way to keep the game going so the score doesn’t get even higher. During a running clock, the clock doesn’t stop unless there is a timeout called or it reaches the end of a quarter.

“I thought we did pretty well,” Carroll said.

The Lady Wolves not only played well on offense, but defense too.

On Saturday the Lady Wolves played Mountain View and came out with another win, 53-45.

Carroll said the Lady Wolves did well during that game too. There were a couple of times when the Lady Wolves would get a 13 or 14 point lead and then Mountain View would catch up.

In the fourth quarter, Mountain View was able to pull within four points of the Lady Wolves, but the Lady Wolves came back with a couple of three pointers and pulled away again.

“They could have took the win, but they didn’t have enough,” Carroll said.

The Lady Wolves played with energy.

“In general, I thought it was a pretty good showing of the team,” Carroll said.

On Saturday the Lady Wolves also played Lyman and lost to them 63-51.

“They are a really good team and they have a very good player,” Carroll said.

He said the Lady Wolves turned over the ball a little too much during the game and they also struggled on defense.

“We lost a little bit of our focus on where we need to be on zone defense,” Carroll said. “That allowed for a couple of baskets.”

Even though the Lady Wolves did get down by double digits, they played hard and competed well.

Leading the team for the Lady Wolves in the Kemmerer game, was Maddie Heiser with 15 points, three assists and five steals, following by Ashelyn Birch with 13 points, two assists and three blocks and Andri Dewey with 11 points, one assist, one block and six steals.

Leading the team in the Mountain View game, was Andri Dewi with 15 points, followed by Maddie Heiser with 10 points and Hannah Hix with nine points.

This weekend the Lady Wolves will have the home-court advantage for the Flaming Gorge Classic.
