Our View: Donate to the county food bank

With Halloween firmly in the proverbial rear-view mirror, many are now turning their attentions to Thanksgiving and the upcoming Christmas and New Year’s holidays.

With Thanksgiving a few weeks away, we would like to remind residents to think about the less fortunate in Green River and consider making a food or cash donation to the Sweetwater County Food Bank.

The food bank serves the county’s residents out of its Rock Springs and Green River locations. The Green River Food Bank is located behind Golden Hour Senior Center in the old Roosevelt Elementary School building. On average, the food bank serves between 100 and 200 Green River families each month and 300-400 families in the Rock Springs area.

Anyone can experience financial hardships during the winter months. Utility bills can increase due to the cold weather and unexpected expenses can crop up at any time. Some need extra support to make it through a rough time and the Sweetwater County Food Bank provides that support.

Residents can provide canned food and even frozen turkeys to the food bank, or they can simply write a check or donate cash. With monetary donations, residents can even specify where their donation can be used. Money donated to the food bank can go a long way as the food bank can purchase food at much lower costs than residents can. However, food donations are what gives the food bank diversity in its offerings.

Outside of food, the food bank also accepts donations for personal items like diapers, children’s books, and sanitary products, all of which can go a long way during the winter months.

The food bank offers an important and necessary service in Sweetwater County and we urge all of our readers to consider a donation to help a struggling family during the upcoming holiday season.
