Juniors win state title

For the first time since 1999, the Green River's 13-15 junior little league team has captured a state title.

They're now invited to compete in San Jose, Calif., in the west region tournament. They are scheduled to take on Washington state's team Monday, with the team having the opportunity to play at least three games during their trip.

Coach Garry McLean said the team came together against a tough team from Powell during the championship game Saturday evening, overcoming a nine run deficit on their road to becoming state champions.

"The boys played hard," manager Paul Moorman said.

McLean said the team had problems maintaining motivation after finding themselves behind by several runs during regular season games, but rallied around opportunities and solid pitching near the end of the game.

They beat Powell 16-15.

"It was a very exciting game," McLean said.

The team now seeks donations to help them travel to California. McLean said they're accepting donations until 5 p.m. Thursday.

McLean said residents and businesses interested in helping out can call Moorman at 871-2288 or send a donation to the team, care of Green River Little League, P.O. Box 1131, Green River, WY., 82935.

Donations can be received after the tournament.
