Speech team grabs another 1st-place trophy

Another trip equals another first-place trophy for the Green River High School Speech and Debate team.

This past weekend, the team traveled to Rawlins and came away with a first-place with 187 points. Rock Springs took second with 45 points and Kelly Walsh came in third with 44 points. The Rawlins tournament is one of the smallest tournaments Green River competes in, but 10 schools attended it.

“We knew we would most likely win this tournament, but the win was a very positive one for the team. We had 10 first-place finishes and we swept first place in all the debates. That is the most first-place finishes at one tournament our team has ever had,” head coach Carina White said. “We have two regular season tournaments left before state and the pressure of that is always in the back of our mind as we finish off our season. We have dominated tournaments this year and we want to win a state title. Everything we do from this point forward is with that in mind.”

White said the team’s work ethic is what continues to impress her. Her team is successful because they take the time to do the work needed to perfect the pieces.

The team is now focusing on perfecting cases with new resolutions, including public forum debate and Lincoln Douglas debate. The public forum debaters are debating the two state solutions for Palestine/Israel and the Lincoln Douglas debaters are debating whether or not the U.S. should guarantee the right to housing. They are still figuring out best case strategies for these topics.

“Our team’s work ethic is remarkable; it is why they are so successful,” White said.

“These kids are driven and motivated. Each win adds momentum to our season. Sweeping all the debates was amazing. I have to say our freshman public forum team, Shelbee McFadden and Robyn Jauregui really stood out this week. They set a goal to break to finals and they won the tournament.”

This weekend the team will travel to Greybull for its tournament.

They will be taking 38 students to this tourney because it is a much smaller tournament with roughly 10 schools attending.

The students going will largely makeup the state and district teams.

“We hope to see Worland as we haven’t seen them in a few weeks and they have some very talented students we would like to see in competition to assess how we stack up against them,” White said.
