Tourneys from a different view

The Green River Speech and Debate varsity team had the chance to see the other side of tournaments this past weekend.

With Green River hosting the tournament, members of the varsity squad, who were unable to compete, learned about what it takes to host a tournament.

“The varsity team helped run the tournament and they did an exceptional job,” White said. “They run everything from concessions to the tabulation room to the judges table. They really came together as a team and put on an exceptional tournament.”

While the varsity squad was helping run the tournament, members of the novice team were busy competing in various tournament events. It’s a way for them to gain as much experience as they can.

The novice team members competed against students from 14 Wyoming schools.

“They have really showed the level of talent they possess and I can’t wait to see this group of kids as they progress into the varsity season,” White said.

The majority of the novice team members made it to the final rounds.

As for the judges of the tournament, White said the tournament wouldn’t have been such a success if it wasn’t for all of the community volunteers.

“It was one of the most well run tournaments we have run to date and it is largely in part to the tremendous outpouring of support by our community, administration, staff and parents,” White said. “They really turned out to judge for us and to supply our hospitality room with great food for our judges.”

Cheyenne East took first place in the 4A division, Worland grabbed first in the 3A division and Glenrock claimed first in the 1A/2A division.

The team is preparing for its next tournament, which is scheduled to take place this weekend in Cheyenne. About 29 schools from Wyoming and Colorado are expected to attend.

“We are ready to take on this exceptionally large tournament,” White said. “We are busy perfecting our pieces and practicing this week. We have had a rash of illness this week so that is difficult, but we are hoping to overcome that.”

The team has been working well together and White is hoping they will continue to do so.
