Lady Wolves drop two in Natrona County

The Green River Lady Wolves volleyball team took on two of the toughest teams in the 4A conference and lost to both teams.

Head coach Rikki Shantz said she knew they would have their work cut out for them when they took on Natrona County and Kelly Walsh. The two losses take the team to 2-2 for the conference season so far.

During the Natrona County game, the Lady Wolves lost to the Fillies in four sets. The Lady Wolves won the first set, but had problems in the second, third and fourth set.

“I liked how we played in the first set,” Shantz said. “They were hitting really well and playing good defense.”

One of the Lady Wolves’ biggest weaknesses was the serve and receive passing, something the Lady Wolves have been working on all season.

“Natrona’s blocking really effected us,” Shantz said.

During the Kelly Walsh game, the Lady Wolves lost all three sets, 14-25, 8-25, 14-25.

“We really couldn’t get into a flow or groove,” Shantz said.

She said the team’s hitting consistency was actually at a negative-hitting percentage; and a team can’t win any games if it has a negative-hitting percentage.

“They knew it was going to be tough, but I know they thought they could play better,” Shantz said.

After the Natrona County game, the girls were still positive and were chatting about what they should have done better, but after the Kelly Walsh game, the girls seemed defeated in the locker room and were pretty quiet.

“I knew they were disappointed in themselves,” Shantz said.

However, the team will need to put these disappointments behind them quickly, since they will be traveling to Casper to participate in the Casper Invitational this weekend.

On Friday the team will be placed in a pool with three other teams, including Kelly Walsh.

After their games on Friday, the teams will either be placed in a gold bracket or silver bracket depending on the points and set wins.

Saturday the team is guaranteed to play two games, if they lose both of those games they are done.

“Both of the tourneys we’ve attended, we didn’t finish well,” Shantz said.

She is hoping the Lady Wolves will change that during this weekend’s tournament.

To prepare for the invitational, the team will continue to work on serve and receive passing. She said without passing a serve to where it can be hit, the team will continue to struggle.
