United Way fundraiser brings goats to community

Members of the community were surprised when goats visited Green River June 15 as part of a United Way fundraiser.

Goat-A-Gram is a United Way of Southwest Wyoming fundraiser for the Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. This was the first year for the fundraiser, but not the last. It was quite successful, bringing in about $4,500 for the Imagination Library and exceeding their expectations.

Participants of the fundraiser paid for goats to be sent to Green River or Rock Springs residents or businesses of their choice. The cost to send a goat-a-gram to someone was $35.

“It cost $35 because that is how much it costs to support one child for a full year in Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library,” Executive Co-Director Kelly Frink said. The Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library supplies children with one book each month for a year.

To send a goat anonymously was an additional $10. It cost $25 to transfer the goat to the next person or business. The goat recipient could also pay $10 to find out who the goat came from, as long as the sender did not send it anonymously.

Along with the goats, the recipients received grams with “Got Your Goat” written on them and a personal message from the sender.

Goat insurance could also be bought in advance for $35 to make sure they would not receive a goat, but could still receive a gram with a message from the sender.

The Wyoming West 4-H Club from Farson and Eden helped supply the goats, and some goats also came from Evanston. They had about 10 goats total, many of them just around one to two months old. The 4-H members and parents helped transfer the goats, as well as community volunteers.

“It went great,” Frink said. “A lot of people had fun.”
