Exhaustion foils Lady Wolves Sat.

Wolves win 2, lose 2

The Green River High School Girls Soccer team is on a roll.

It's almost midway through the season and the lady wolves are already making a name for themselves. The girls dominated the Friday games at the Worland tournament this weekend, but fell short Saturday as a result of exhaustion.

"We did really good Friday," head coach Tracy Wyant said. "We started out really good, really strong."

Wyant said those first games were good for her and the team because she was able to try a variation of rotations, various combinations of line-ups, and circulate many players into the game. She said the team worked well together, and they passed well.

"The girls were exited, the girls were fresh," Wyant said. "They were able to get the job done."

The wolves dominated Friday's games, winning against Douglas, 8-0, and Pinedale, 6-1.

The lady wolves proved they are a team to contend with when they played against Jackson Saturday morning.

"In my opinion, we completely dominated that game," Wyant said.

Green River was in front of Jackson's net 90 percent of the game, she said. The girls made 33 shots on Jackson's goal, yet only one made it in. Their Achilles' heel in gameplay is still finishing plays. Taylor Stoeger completed Green River's sole goal of the game.

"Distance shots in the wind were not in our favor that day," Wyant said.

Jackson's players would pack the goal box, she said. There were so many behind the ball, making the field congested. Three minutes left in the game Jackson was able to grab a goal, tying with Green River.

With a couple minutes left in the game, Jackson spotted a break in Green River's defense, and tucked in past an unmarked girl making one more goal before the game ended. Green River lost to Jackson, 2-1.

"We should've had the Jackson game," she said. "We completely dominated the pitch in 90 percent of the game. Hands down we were the better team."

The girls had about an hour and a half rest before warming back up for the next game Saturday afternoon.

Their game against Worland was an exhausting one. Two full games back-to-back proved challenging for the wolves.

"They gave everything they had," she said. "They were just exhausted. We made so many mistakes because we were tired."

The wolves lost to Worland, 5-3.

Because they were so worn from the game before, Wyant said the girls reverted back to old habits. The girls were fatigued, and some players were missing in the game due to injury. They struggled to finish, and were unlucky in shots made, she said.

The second game Saturday showed Wyant the girls may need to condition more before their next games. Although, she said four full games in two days is a lot, and can tire any team.

"It was a lot of soccer," she said. "We just did not have enough gas in the tank to get the job done."

The Green River girls will find out if they have enough gas in their tank to win against two Casper teams this weekend.

The team will play against Natrona high school Friday, and Kelly Walsh Saturday. Both games are at home.

To prepare for these challenging teams, Green River will be practicing finishing and crosses, Wyant said.

"Everything else is falling into play," she said. "We're looking strong."

The two Casper teams are good teams, she said. They are more physical, they're fast, they have good defense, all-around teams.

"Speed of play is there. They tend to challenge us," she said. "We've always been up to the challenge for the Casper schools. We're ready for it."

An important aspect of preparing for the games against Casper is mental. Wyant said the Casper teams are one of those teams that can get in her girls' heads. They have to mentally prepare for that.

"We have to earn every win with these guys," she said.
