Indoor track finishes season

Givens, Kester earn all-state honors

Two athletes involved with the Green River High School Indoor Track team finished the season with medals at the state meet in Gillette over the weekend.

Josie Givens earned her third all-state award during the competition, finishing second in the girls 800-meters and seventh in the girls 1600-meters. Kalen Kester also earned all-state, taking second in the long jump with a jump of 21 feet and 8 inches. Kester also competed in the 55-meter dash and finished in a three-way tie for third during the preliminaries, but was unable to make it to the event’s finals.

Overall, head coach Steve Boyd said the team performed well.

“We had no major hiccups,” Boyd said.

Boyd said most of the athletes have seen improvements since the beginning of the season, something that will help the students as they transition into the spring sports. A majority of the athletes will join outdoor track, while a few will sign up for soccer.

Boyd said one handicap the distance runners faced during the season came from the weather.

Boyd prefers to let the distance runners train outside, but was unable to do so until after the Simplot Games because of the ice that had developed made running outside unsafe.

“We didn’t get outside for a long time,” Boyd said.

For Boyd, it was a great season. He said the team worked hard and was well-behaved throughout the season.
