Children invited to Sweetwater Library's Dr. Seuss Party

Those wanting to meet the Cat in the Hat will definitely want to stop by the library Saturday for the Dr. Seuss party.

In an effort to promote reading and literacy, the Sweetwater County Library is once again hosting a Dr. Seuss party. The event will take place at the library from 1-3 p.m.

Children attending the event will watch “Green Eggs, and Ham” in the reader’s theater at 1:30, 2 or 2:30 p.m.

When the children are not busy watching a show, they can play Dr. Seuss games, have their photo taken with the Cat in the Hat, get their face painted, visit the coloring and learning stations or attend the Great Seuss Scavenger Hunt.

“Celebrating a love of reading along with the characters and places that come to life when children read is an important part of what we try to do in youth services,” youth services manager Becky Iwen said. “I hope that the Sweetwater County Library is a place that young and old alike can come for information and fun.”

This well-attended event brings in a lot of children and adults alike. Iwen said they usually have about 250-350 people attend. Children of all ages are encouraged to attend, however, the focus is for those who are two to eight years old.

“A child’s ability to read has a direct effect on their future success. Reading with your child helps to increase their vocabulary and improves their reading fluency and comprehension,” Iwen said. “Our event focuses of the books of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss.”

This party is the official kick-off event to the Read Across America Week, which is next week.

“Dr. Seuss has captured the imagination of generations. With over 60 books published, Seuss created numerous books for children learning to read,” Iwen said. “One of my favorite quotes from Dr. Seuss is, ‘You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read with a child.””

The library will host regular events during Read Across America Week, including their regular scheduled toddler times and story times. They will also host a special event on Friday, March 4, called “We Love Books” with book bingo. This event is scheduled to take place 1:30-3:30 p.m. to take advantage of Sweetwater County School District No 2’s early out.

The youth services area of the library will feature Dr. Seuss crafts and book display all next week.

Those who are unable to make it to the Green River events may want to make their way over to Rock Springs for their special events. Dr. Seuss events will take place at the White Mountain Library on March 2, from 4-5 p.m.; and at the Rock Springs Library, March 3, from 3:30-4:30 p.m.
