Marchals win state tennis in Gillette

Boys team places 4th

GRHS Varsity boys tennis ended their season triumphantly. The boys team took fourth place at State, with 30 points. Gillette took first. Second was Jackson and third was Cheyenne Central.

GRHS boys number two doubles duo, Patrick and Gregory Marchal won first place at State, for number two doubles' Championship Bracket.

"When we won it, we were really thrilled," Gregory Marchal said. "We were trying to be optimistic but we didn't think we'd go as far as we did ... I fell over I was so excited." Boys number one doubles team, McCaden Mikesell and Ian Ebert were runners up in their championship bracket, and number three doubles team, Evan Carollo and Cody Lee won the consolation bracket in their doubles bracket.

"We had a really good time and it was a team effort," Gregory said.

"They did great," Coach Phil Harder said. "There's eight boys on varsity, and four out of the eight were awarded All-State honors, which was pretty neat."

The four awarded were the number one doubles team, McCaden Mikesell and Ian Ebert and number two doubles team, Patrick and Gregory Marchal.

"Six out of the eight were all conference the week before so it was pretty nice for them to go from all-conference to all-state. It's quite the honor and achievement. They earned it," Harder said. "Just gotta keep the momentum going through the winter and into the spring and on to next fall."

Harder is hopeful for next year and looking to improve. There are a lot of good upcoming players, he said.

Improvement can always be done and there's always something to do better.

"They want to compete and get better," Harder said. "I know our kids would play year-round if they could."
