SNAAG continues to net alleged criminals

Late last week, the Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Green River and Rock Springs police departments, arrested three people in Green River on drug charges.

That same week, the sheriff’s office helped capture a Rock Springs woman in Colorado who was wanted on a felony theft charge. Both incidents were handled by the sheriff’s office newly-formed SNAAG unit. SNAAG, the Sheriff’s Narcotics and Arrest Group, has had a busy month working warrants and drug investigations and is credited with more than 50 arrests, most of which come from people wanted on standing warrants.

Sheriff Mike Lowell said the group is actively working the drug problem in Sweetwater County, a problem he views as being the largest issue the office is dealing with.

“We’re moving right along,” he said about the group’s activities.

In the Green River drug arrests, a sheriff’s office press release states two Rock Springs residents, 30-year-old Randy Britt and 27-year-old Oscar Rodriguez were arrested with 23-year-old Green River resident Stormie Prime. Britt is charged with alleged unlawful manufacture or deliver of methamphetamine, felony possession of methamphetamine and felony possession of marijuana. Rodriguez was charged with possession of methamphetamine and interference with a peace officer while Prime was charged with possession of methamphetamine. The release states Prime and Rodriguez are free on bond. Lowell said while the Southwest Drug Enforcement Team does investigate drug cases in Sweetwater County, he doesn’t believe the team relieves local law enforcement from working narcotic and substance abuse cases.

He said the team is actively involved in drug purchases and utilizes undercover officers in their investigations. However, narcotics aren’t the only issue SNAAG focuses on. They’re involved with investigations and servicing warrants from the county’s courts.

Regarding the woman charged with felony theft, the unit traced 44-year-old Amy L. Callahan to Greeley, Colo., where she was arrested without incident by the Greeley Police Department.

Callahan is charged with exploitation of a vulnerable adult and felony theft after she alleged stole a 1994 Ford Explorer from a woman who has difficulties caring for herself. Both charges have a sentence maximum of 10 years in prison, a $10,000 fine, or both.
