Team now sets sights on district

With another State Championship trophy added to the collection, the Green River High School Speech and Debate Team has already set its sights on other things.

This year, 43 members will attend the District Tournament, which will take place Thursday through Saturday at Central Wyoming College in Riverton.

“We have one season tournament left which is our district tournament next weekend in Riverton,” head coach Carina Stulken said. “This tournament is the national qualifying tournament.”

The tournament is a double elimination and will continue until there is a final round in each event. Depending on the size of the entry the top two or three finishers in each event advance to nationals to represent their school.

Those who advance to nationals will travel to Dallas, Texas, which is where the competition will take place this year.

At districts the GRHS speech team is allowed entries based off of how many degrees the team earned throughout their competitive season.

“We have earned 385 so far which gives us the most entries in our district at 35 out of 36 for individual events and debates, two in senate and 12 in congress,” she said.

“We are hoping to have several qualifiers; and we are also hoping to defend our seven-time district championship with an eighth consecutive victory,” Stulken said.

Winning the state tournament was exactly what the team needed to build its momentum going into the district tournament.

“These students are driven and they want to go to nationals,” she said. “We will be working hard this week, but we only have through Wednesday as we leave Thursday morning for competition.”

The team’s goal is to win districts as the overall champion and bring home as many national qualifying spots for Green River as possible, she said.

“This tournament allows students the opportunity to go head to head with the best in their event and hopefully we will have a lot of qualifiers,” Stulken said.

Students attending districts are Victoria Allen, Morgan Burbank, Sydney Burbank, Maggie Fischer, Kayla Gibson, Victoria Gilliam, Abigaile Grubb, Alan Halverson, Patrick Harvey, Haylee Heiner, Becca Higbee, Savannah Hook, John Howard, Dallin McKay Hoyt, Vabsi Ibarra, Atlin Johnson, Lynzi Johnson, Phaedon Jones, Katrina Knight, Chase Dean Kontz, Reina Kropf, Spencer Kurth, Haley Lauze, Jesse Lauze, Mikki Makie, Alexander Marchal, Gregory Marchal, Patrick Marchal, Michael Montoya, Katelyn Elizabeth Moorman, Emma Nathan, Colt Parson, Kirsti Patterson, Leslie Patterson, JD Richardson, Sarah Roberts, Kolbi Schanzenback, Christian Smith, Sheridan Stock, Sarah Sullivan, Maggie Taliaferro, Emilee Thomas and Kaitlyn Tyler.
