Letter: Research voting records before Nov. 4

Dear Editor,

With the elections coming up we should recall that on March 1, 2013, many U.S. Senators and Representatives supported Budget Sequestration. This had a negative effect on our nation that still hurts, such as reneging on contractually agreed upon health and education assistance to Native Americans and veterans, food aid to poor children and single mothers, as well as to things like road and bridge repair.

Far from being regretful, these same legislators allowed the government shutdown to occur on Oct. 1, 2013, then many, on Oct. 17, 2013, voted against reopening (funding) the government.

We send these legislators to Washington to legislate, not to behave as bullies and conduct blackmail. It seems like it has been more about hurting Kid O than doing what’s good for the nation. Their votes have been selfish, short sighted, and did tremendous harm to the country. Kentucky’s powerful Senator Mitch McConnell has indicated that if he’s returned to office, shutdowns will become the norm.

Many of the guilty legislators I’m referring to have come up with unbelievable explanations of “what really happened”, as if ashamed to back up their votes, and of how they were “forced” to vote one way or another. They have barely intelligible explanations of some incredible conspiracies. This is a “Calvin and Hobbes” comic strip become real.

Check how your legislators voted on the above dates before you vote, and let that be your guide.
