Letter: In support of the lodging tax

Dear Editor,

The renewal of the Sweetwater County Lodging Tax will be on the ballot Nov. 4. This tax helps bring in more than $185 million each year, provides 1,900 jobs and contributes millions in taxes.

Yet, the tax does not cost you or me one cent. This tax is paid by visitors who stay overnight in our hotels, bed and breakfasts and campgrounds. No local residents pay this tax unless they stay in our lodging establishments.

The Sweetwater County Joint Travel and Tourism Board uses the funds to develop tourism and enhance the local economy by bringing visitors to the area that will stay in the local hotels and RV parks, eat at local restaurants and shop at local retailers.

To do so, the board purchases advertising, provides funding to more than 30 local events that draw out-of-county attendance, provides funding to maintain the Rock Springs and Green River visitor’s centers, supports marketing efforts at the Sweetwater County Events Complex and works to recruit conventions and sporting events to the area. This tax is an all or nothing vote. The lodging tax will no longer be collected if the for is no.

Vote yes for the lodging tax, the tax we don’t pay but benefit from.
