Lady Wolves tame Lady Tigers in Rock Springs

It was a battle back and forth from the beginning of the game until the end for the Green River High School Lady Wolves basketball team, but they held on for the win.

On Thursday, the Lady Wolves took on their biggest rivals, the Rock Springs Lady Tigers, and came out on top 44-42.

"I think defensively we played pretty well throughout the whole game," head coach Rick Carroll said.

He said the defensive players worked really hard to get through the picks and get the sets. Carroll said he thought the team kept track of the Lady Tigers and they didn't allow them to cut against the key.

The Lady Wolves also out rebounded the Lady Tigers, 36 to 25.

"I think it was really significant in the fourth quarter when it was a really tight game," Carroll said.

Offensively, the Lady Wolves still have some things to work on, however, Carroll said there were times during the game when they were playing really good offense and making some easy shots. What is causing the Lady Wolves problems is that free-throw line.

They hit 16 out of 32 for a 50 percent shooting percentage. Carroll said the Lady Wolves were better at hitting those free-throws in the second half than in the first half. During the first half, they hit four out of 14 shots on the free-throw line, while in the second half, the Lady Wolves hit 12 of 18 at the free-throw line.

"We had an opportunity to make free throws to distance ourselves we just didn't take advantage of that," Carroll said.

Even though the team may have struggled with hitting free-throws, Hannah Hix didn't miss two when the team really needed it the most. Carroll said Hix hit two big free throws at the end of the game, which basically put the team up by two and put the game away for them.

"I thought it was a really good game," Carroll said.

Leading the Lady Wolves in the Rock Springs game was Ashelynn Birch with 14 points and 11 rebounds, followed by Andri Dewey with 11 points, four rebounds, two assists and three steals, Madelyn Heiser with six points, six rounds and four assists, Taylor Stoeger with eight points and six rebounds and Hix with three points and six rebounds.

This past weekend the team had a chance to rest, but they will travel to Casper this weekend to take on two tough teams -- Natrona County and Kelly Walsh.
