Junior wrestlers compete in City Championships

All the elementary kids were very excited as they entered the gymnasium in the Green River High School. The junior wrestlers were finally able to compete in the Green River City Championships hosted by the Green River High School Wrestling team. There were 167 junior wrestlers this year that competed in the tournament.

The Green River High School Wrestling team has been hosting youth wrestling camps for boys and girls since November 6. Students from Monroe, Truman, Harrison and Washington Elementary had the chance to learn how the sport of wrestling works and learn different techniques. Some of the fundamentals they were taught included tumbling, team building, school pride, hard work, giving effort, sportsmanship and teamwork. The Green River High School Wrestling team would go to the elementary schools during PE classes to educate the kids about the sport of wrestling and they also held practices after school.

"I enjoy seeing our community coming together through the sport of wrestling," said Head Coach Josh Wisniewski. "The smiles on the kiddos' faces. The bravery they show when they get out on the mat to compete. I enjoy seeing the GRHS wrestlers working with our young wrestlers. I enjoy seeing the JR Wolves looking up to our wrestlers. The relationships that our High School wrestlers build with these youth wrestlers is unmatched."

Coach Wisniewski is very proud of the Green River High School wrestlers and said they did a fantastic job with the junior wrestlers. They coached all the practices and the tournament. They were referees and ran the tables at the tournament. They also set up mats and took them down along with running the concession stands.

The Monroe Huskies took first place at the tournament, the Harrison Eagles took second, the Truman Dragons took third and the Washington Patriots took fourth.
