Boys wrestlers take 2nd at Thoman, girls have two champions

This past Friday and Saturday, Green River High School hosted the Thoman Memorial Wrestling Tournament with 20 schools competing from throughout Wyoming as well as out-of-state teams from Rifle, Colorado; Uintah, Utah; Grantsville, Utah; and Salem Hills, Utah.

The tournament took place in three gyms at Green River High School, Green River Recreation Center and Rock Springs High School. The format also included, for the first time, a full slate of girls wrestlers.

The teams were broken down into groups A, B, C, and D, with five teams in each group competing against each other in individual duals. Green River was in Pool A and went undefeated, defeating Buffalo 76-0, Mountain View 71-12, Cokeville 72-3, and Laramie 57-18. They then competed on the Gold side of the bracket and defeated Rawlins in a quarter final matchup 57-21 before going on to defeat Worland in the semi finals 57-21 to move their record to 6-0 in this very tough regional meet.

The Wolves then took on the number one seed from the opposite bracket and were soundly defeated by the always tough Uinta Utes. The Utes defeated Green River 50-15 with the Wolves wrestlers in the lower weights scoring all of Green Rivers' points. Spencer Wright at 113, Axel Mackinnon at 120, Ryker Mele at 132, Kale Knezovich at 138 and Thomas Dalton at 145 all won by decision over their powerful Uinta opponents.

In the girls tournament there were teams from Pinedale, Laramie, Lyman, Worland, Rawlins, Buffalo, Cheyenne South, Evanston, Wheatland, Campbell County, Kemmerer, Rock Springs, and Rifle, Colorado.

The girls team, consisting of Jayleigh Wright in the 100 pound weight class, Brianna Uhrig at 110, Zella Maez at 120, Lily Harris at 125, Mikayla Green at 130 and Kylie Miller at 140-145, gained valuable experience as they compete for their first year in varsity wrestling.

Top finishers for the Lady Wolves were Uhrig, who won her three matches to take first place; Maez, who won all three of her matches with pins to take first; and Harris who took second, pinning two of her opponents before losing a close 5-4 decision.

Coach Wisniewski commented that they are looking forward to heading to Lander this weekend for their next meet.
