Girls seeded fourth at Regional tournament

The Green River High School girls basketball team will head into regionals in fourth place this week after finishing conference 7-3 with one loss and one win last weekend.

The annual Make A Wish game against Rock Springs last Thursday ended with a 49-41 loss for the Lady Wolves. The team started well but struggled in the second half, according to Coach Rick Carroll.

“I thought we started out the game a lot better than the first time that we played them,” Carroll said. “Just kind of got away from being patient I think and lost the game down the stretch because I think we got in too big of a hurry and just didn’t do as good of a job as we needed to do defensively.”

The Lady Wolves ended up fouling several times as they tried to catch up to the Tigers, giving Rock Springs chances to make free throws, which made it so Green River never caught up again, Carroll explained.

During the game, Megan Counts scored 11 points, Daryn Macy scored nine and Ella Stanton and Gabby Heizer both scored seven. Counts also had 11 rebounds and Sarah Wilson contributed 10 rebounds as well as nine assists.

“So we had some good individual stats,” Carroll noted. “We just didn’t do a good job of finishing the game as a team.”

Despite the loss, the Lady Wolves came back and played better the next night, beating Star Valley 41-22 on Friday.

Carroll credits the win to the better efforts by the defense, who made it hard for Star Valley to score, which contributed to an early lead in the first half of the game. The defense also did better keeping track of the opposing team’s main shooters than they had in the game against Rock Springs, according to Carroll.

Against Star Valley, Counts scored 14 points and Jayla Braden scored seven points. Heizer and Alyssa Cudney both led the way with six rebounds each, and Wilson contributed four assists.

This week the Lady Wolves are headed to Riverton for the start of regionals. With their fourth place seed they’ll start by going up against the team they just beat, facing Star Valley who placed fifth. Although they’ve already beaten Star Valley recently, Carroll wants to be sure the team doesn’t take their opponent lightly.

“We’ve got to be prepared to play them,” he said. “They’re going to throw in some new wrinkles to see if they can do some things differently that will help them to score some points. And so we’ve got to be at the top of our game to be prepared for what we might happen to see from them. So we’ll try and make sure that we’re not complacent and try and make sure that we’re playing intense basketball.”
