Boy Scouts paint over graffiti on Viaduct

Residents and visitors walking along the Viaduct overlooking the Union Pacific rail yard can do so without seeing the tags and images previously spray-painted along its length.

This is due to the work of Eagle Scout Elijah Kropf and Boy Scout Troop 312 giving the Viaduct a new coat of paint last month.

Kropf, a student at Western Wyoming Community College, decided to paint the Viaduct as his Eagle Scout project.

Kropf said he chose the project because of how important the Viaduct is to Green River’s residents.

“The city needed me to do it,” he said.

He said the project took nearly three months to organize. The actual project itself took about five hours, with Kropf and his father starting in the morning and other volunteers assisting soon after.

The Green River City Council honored Kropf and the troop for their work on the bridge Tuesday evening.

“That’s an amazing accomplishment in my mind,” Mayor Pete Rust said. “It makes me proud.”

Rust said he hopes other residents are inspired by the project and Troop 312 to initiate similar projects and have pride in the community.

Councilwoman Sherry Bushman said people often hear about how Troop 312 volunteers for projects and assists with community events, saying the Scouts are great examples of people wanting to take care of the city.

Kropf plans to major in engineering in college and also has an interest in theater.
