Green River golfers excel

The Green River High School golf team is off to a strong start this season, and head coach Karly Eyre is excited for both the postseason and the future of the program.

The season started with the Snake River Shootout on Aug. 11 and 12, with the first day held in Jackson Hole and the second day in Cedar Creek. The GRHS girls took first place overall, and three individual girls had scores in the top 10. One Green River boy finished in the top 10.

The golf team participated in the Star Valley Invite on Aug. 16 and 17. Although the girls came in second overall, Eyre said the second day of the tournament was one of the best days the girls have had, and they rallied and shot one of the lowest overall scores the team has seen. Isabell Salas took first overall in individual scores and two more girls again finished in the top 10.

The Rock Springs Invite on Aug. 26 and 27 was another good event for the girls, who again came in first overall. Eyre said she can’t remember a time the GRHS team, either boys or girls, won the Rock Springs Invite, which includes several larger schools, “so for our girls to rally and come back and then win the tournament in Rock Springs, it was exciting.”

This week the Rolling Green Country Club hosted the Green River Invite on Aug. 30 and 31. Teams from Kemmerer, Evanston and Lyman competed against the GRHS teams. More students from Green River were able to participate in the event than usual since the field was smaller, according to Eyre. Seventeen boys from Green River competed.

“We’re excited to see what our boys can do,” Eyre said. “It’s kind of helping us shake out where people are at for the postseason.” She explained that the results of the event could help decide who will compete on conference and state teams.

Eyre expressed her excitement over the girls’ strength and the boys’ potential. She said the team’s top three girls — Isabell Salas, Luci Adams and Kaelea Gibson — are doing good, and all the other girls are battling to improve and compete at the same level. The boys are continually improving, with several young students showing progress.

“We’ve got a lot of young kids that have worked really hard through the summer, and we’re seeing them gradually keep improving, which is fantastic,” Eyre said. She also said she believes, since many of the students are freshmen and sophomores, the program could have talented players for years to come.

“I’m over the moon happy — that’s where I wanted our program to be,” Eyre said. “We have numbers, we have depth, we have great kids, and we’re excited about our postseason opportunities for sure.”
