Knights enter district tournament as 1st seed

The Green River Knights A team are standing tall as they head into the West District tournament this weekend in Cowley. The Knights are the top seeded team in the division, allowing them to take on the winner of the first-round game between Powell and Buffalo Saturday morning.

Head coach Benjamin Lail said the team has excelled throughout their conference, earning an 8-0 record in conference play.

“We’re playing really well this season,” he said.

Lail part of that success if attributed to how well players have gotten along with one another than they have in the past, improving their ability and willingness to work together. Lail also said the older players have stepped up in their leadership roles, helping the team achieve their goals.

However, one of the most memorable displays of camaraderie this season came when honoring a player from Rawlins who had died prior to the start of the season. The Knights honored his memory by playing with his name on their uniforms and wearing armbands displaying the player’s number.

Lail said the display highlighted the fact that baseball is just a game, but displays like that help mold the players into better people.

The team took part in a tournament in Douglas last weekend to scout out the competition they will face this weekend.

Lail said as long as they continue playing like they have so far, the team will make it far.
