Our View: Tower shouldn't be OK'd

A decision regarding if an 80-foot cell tower will be built near the Green River Post Office and Ace Hardware will be made during the July 6 Green River City Council meeting and we're hoping the Council doesn't approve it.

This isn't about the supposed danger of potential 5G service and we're not against Union Wireless or the idea of cellular communication. The simple fact of the matter is its proposed lattice design and its height will create an eyesore for residents and visitors in Green River.

We admit, a cell tower in this day and age eventually gets ignored as people decide it's somebody else's problem and carry on with their lives. Yet, we wonder why should we have to get used to it?

We understand the height and design makes it easier to colocate different carriers on the tower, but we wonder if this is the only solution available to Union Wireless. Why couldn't we see something different or possibly more unique that serves that same function? Perhaps an 80-foot lattice structure resembling a deer? Something that residents can point to with pride and the city could capitalize on. Among other things, the city is known for its dedication to the arts, as the numerous sculptures and public art instillations in the city prove.

We believe there is a missed opportunity and a simple lattice tower would detract from the local view shed. We think something more creative should be considered.
