Soccer teams seek wins against RS Thurs.

Following a week plagued by injury and player absences, the Wolves soccer team is looking to show what they can do at full strength this week against the Rock Springs Tigers Thursday. Both the boys and girls took on Evanston Wednesday, but the results of that game were unavailable as of press time.

The boys lost a close game to Star Valley last week, dropping the game 2-1. The sole goal scored by the Wolves was from Braxton Cordova. Head coach Kahler Dawson said the team, despite injuries, was able to keep up with the Star Valley squad, but the boys were unable make scoring shots on the Braves’ goal. He said that, as well as a few calls against the Wolves, sealed their loss last Thursday.

The boys second game, facing Jackson, was more difficult for the Wolves as they had lost players to both injury and to the high school cheerleading team’s competition in Florida. Dawson said the numbers were so low, the Wolves’ junior varsity squad needed players from the Jackson team to play their game. During both games, the Wolves only had a single reserve player on the bench.

Despite that, Dawson was pleased with how the Wolves played in the first 20 minutes, with Green River’s sole goal coming from Jachob Fuss through an assist by Abner Ibarra.

“They played really well short-handed,” he said.

The game was tied 1-1 during those early minutes of the game, but the numbers began to work against the Wolves as the players were forced to deal with fatigue. By the end of the game, Green River would take an 11-1 loss from Jackson.

For Thursday’s game, the Tigers and Wolves are competing for the Sweetwater Cup, based on goals one team made over the other during the regular season.

The Wolves are down two scores following their 2-0 defeat in Rock Springs April 8. A shutout 3-0 win would earn the Wolves the cup.

Dawson said he’s looking forward to seeing the Wolves play with more of the team’s players and has a positive outlook on how the team will compete this week.

The girls are also looking to improve over last week following two losses from Star Valley and Jackson. Like the boys, the girls team was impacted by absences related the cheerleaders’ competition. The team took a 6-0 loss from Star Valley Thursday, followed by another scoreless 13-0 loss from Jackson.

During the last game the Lady Wolves played with the Lady Tigers, the girls lost 14-1.
