Boys seek a ticket to State basketball tourney

Following a mixed week seeing the Green River High School boys basketball team win the annual Make-A-Wish game against Rock Springs (46-39) and suffer a difficult loss at home from Star Valley (64-44), the Wolves are preparing for a make of break meeting with Evanston Thursday to determine who moves on to State and who goes home for the season.

Head coach Laurie Ivie said the Wolves are ready.

“We are ready and prepared to play Evanston on Thursday evening,” she said.

Thus far, the Wolves have been unable to defeat the Red Devils in the teams’ two prior meetings. The games have been close too, with the first ending 65-59 and the second being much closer at 62-59. Ivie and the Wolves know what to prepare for.

“We are focusing on boxing out, rebounding and taking care of the basketball,” she said.

In last week’s game against the Tigers, Ivie said the Wolves had fewer turnovers and “scored more points from the paint.”

However, against Star Valley, the boys struggled. Ivie gave credit to the coaching staff and players from Star Valley, saying the team is both well-coached and very talented.

“They shoot the ball so well - 10 of 18 from three on Saturday. They have guards who can get to rack and then kick to open shooters on the perimeter,” Ivie said.

The boys play Evanston at 3 p.m., in Star Valley. The winner of that game will take on the winner of a Star Valley-Jackson game at 6 p.m.

The top team in the Southwest quadrant then takes on the top team from the Northwest to determine top seeding for state.
