Wrestlers stand tall to RS

The Wolves wrestling team had a successful week of competition, with the JV squad defeating a team from Wind River High School and the varsity boys taking down the Rock Springs Tigers at a home dual.

The Wolves sent the Tigers home after a 45-35 skirmish while they left Wind River High School 53-24.

“The boys were a little nervous at first going down 30-6 against Rock Springs,” head coach Josh Wisniewski said. “They were able to weather the storm and come up with some big wins in our lower weights that helped us secure a win.”

The coach said the boys were excited with their win. As for Wind River, Wisniewski said it was nice to take on another scrappy team.

Overall, Wisniewski thinks the boys are wrestling well, but says there are still areas they can improve in.

The annual Thoman wrestling tournament takes place in Green River this weekend and the Wolves are excited to host.

“ It’s always fun to wrestle at home, sleeping in our own beds, wrestling in front of our fans,” he said.

Like everything else, the pandemic has resulted in adjustments to how the tournament is hosted, with changes done to help keep wrestlers safe from a COVID-19 infection while giving them the opportunity compete. Wisniewski said the boys are looking to out in a great week of practice to prepare for the high level of competition they will face.

After the tournament, the boys will be starting the back portion of their season and preparing for Regionals and State. The Wolves took second last year in a result that ended up being contested by Sweetwater County School District No. 2’s Athletics Department. This year, Wisniewski said he’s excited about the team’s potential to grow before those culminating tournaments.

“We will be wrestling a lot more competitions that will help us prepare for Regionals and State,” he said. “I’m excited about this team’s potential and as long as we keep putting in great practices it should help us improve and wrestle well during competitions.”
