Wolves earn 2 more wins

Winning four of their last five games, the Green River High School boys basketball team is in a good position for Regionals.

Monday night, the Wolves defeated Riverton in a rescheduled home game originally intended to take place Feb. 14, but were cancelled due to road conditions. The Wolves also earned a win over Jackson Saturday afternoon in a 80-47 game. The boys lost to Evanston 67-66 Thursday night in a game that extended into triple overtime.

"We're riding the peak at the right time," head coach Laurie Ivie said after the Monday night game.

Ivie said the team has narrowed its focus to rebounding and defense as the regular season winds to a close.

"We're in a good spot -- we'd be crazy to change anything now," she said.

Facing the Wolverines, Ivie said the team had a slow start as Riverton quickly scored five points on the Wolves at the start of the game. However, the Wolves started getting serious in the second quarter and were able to end the quarter with a 35-30 lead over the Wolverines.

The two teams battled throughout the third quarter as the Wolves maintained their lead, but a buzzer-beating three-point shot by Jachob Fuss at the end of the third quarter and another three-pointer by Kolby Ivie in the fourth quarter sealed the deal for the Wolves. Frustration from the Wolverines led to several free throw opportunities near the end of the game, which the Wolves capitalized on to pad their lead.

An abbreviated schedule due to winter weather has led to the Wolves playing five games in eight days.

"It's a crazy amount of games," Ivie said. After Thursday's home game against the Rock Springs Tigers, the team will travel to Afton Friday to take on Star Valley. While the schedule has been tough for the team, Ivie expects the boys to be ranked third when Regionals begin. While she believes Star Valley to be a front runner in the conference, she believes the Regional title is up for grabs and any time, including the Wolves can win it.

The Wolves' game with Rock Springs starts at 7:30 p.m. at GRHS.
