As the 2020 election season begins to heat up across the United States, the Sweetwater County Clerk’s Office is gearing up for local elections.
“We want more people involved in elections,” Sweetwater County Clerk Cindy Lane said. “We want more people to vote.”
Lane said the office is seeking to educate residents about important election deadlines should they want to register to vote, change parties or seek an absentee ballot prior to the elections.
Lane said her office is trying to get more people registered to vote and said a few teens have already registered. For those currently 17 years old, who will be 18 when the elections start, they can come in to register. People can register up to 15 days before the primary or general elections take place. However, should someone forget to do so, Wyoming allows voters to register the day of an election. The voter will need to bring an identification with their address when they visit their precinct’s polling place and register on site.
For people who have moved, Lane suggests calling the clerk’s office to change their address and find out where they need to vote at. She said problems can occur when residents vote at their old polling place, which can feature races for council wards or legislative districts the voter would not be eligible to vote for.
For people looking to use an absentee ballot, she said residents don’t have to provide a reason to the clerk’s office for seeking one. They can simply call the clerk’s office or walk in to receive one. Absentee ballot would need to be received by Aug. 18, which is the date of the Primary Election, and Nov. 3, the date of the General Election.
