Indoor track season begins with 2 meets

Green River's indoor track team split up this weekend with a small contingent of runners heading South to compete with Evanston, Mountain View, Rock Springs and Star Valley and dozens of Utah and Idaho teams at the 2020 UHSTCA Indoor Invitational at the Olympic Oval in Kearns, Utah.

A somewhat larger contingent traveled to Laramie the same days to compete at their smaller invitational.

The outstanding performer on the day for the Lady Wolves was junior Muriel Jones, who finished 39th out of 266 runners in the girls 1,600-meter run, with a time of 5:39.30. Greg Sherwin, also a junior, finished ahead of nearly half the runners in his event, taking 200th in a field of almost 400 runners, by finishing in 5:11.93.

A number of other Wolves achieved their personal best and all got valuable experience in this huge high school meet.

In Laramie, the team competed against Cheyenne Centra, Cheyenne South, Laramie, Rawlins, Rock Springs and Western Heritage Lutheran Academy.

As far as the meet went the coaches. According to head coach Dan Hansen, they ”were pleased with the first performance of the season.”

Though there were no team scores kept, those finishing in the top eight in their events who would have scored points for their team included Mariyah Brady, who had the top finish for the Wolves with a second-place finish in the 55-meter hurdles, along with Alaina Maiers, who was seventh in the shot put.

Top performances for the boys included Cole McKinley, who was sixth in the 200-meter dash and Tyler Killett, who placed fifth in the 400 .meters

Hansen said “many other athletes performed well in their events, as they set personal records for themselves.”

Next up for the Wolves will be another road trip, this time to the south, to compete in a large high school meet in Utah at Weber State this upcoming weekend.
